Why do Honours?

The Honours program is an exclusive course that accepts only the most gifted and high achieving students from an undergraduate degree. Honours graduates are seen as being highly valuable by employers as they are the pre-eminent graduates of an undergraduate degree.

Honours graduates are extremely well regarded for their advanced skills and knowledge in industry. The research experience gained through the course of studies places graduates in excellent stead in a competitive employment market. The ability to critically assess problems and work independently is highly regarded by employers. Further more the econometric / data analysis skills, research, communication and presentation skills are highly valued by employers. Honours graduates are regarded as the applicants of choice by many government agencies and large corporations.

The Honours program is a must for a career in tertiary education. Many honours graduates go onto doctoral studies within Australia and the world, receiving grants and scholarships (including Rhodes scholarships). The honours program gives students an understanding of the demands placed on students working towards higher degrees by research. The honours program is a prerequisite in most cases for admission to a PhD or Masters by research program within Australia.

When studying in the honours program students are also given the opportunity to be a member of the teaching staff. It is normally expected that students will be involved in teaching within the School of Commerce and learn how it is to be on the ‘other side’ of the educational system. This provides students with high-end employment experience and provides the practise of crucial presentation and management skills.

Finally a number of scholarships and teaching assistant positions are available for honours students. Please see financial assistance for further details.
